Sheep filing in through the arched gatehouse entrance of the massive stone wall that surrounds much of the expansive 3+ acre medieval Augustinian ruin site known as Kells Priory, just south of the town of Kilkenny Ireland, County Kilkenny. The structure is the remains of a fortified gate house integrated into the outer wall of the Kells Priory site. This view is from outside the entrance looking into the vast pasture grazed by the sheep.

The Augustine Priory is situated along King's River and was founded in the late 12th century by Geoffrey FitzRobert. Archeological and historical study have led scholars to believe the site was attacked and burned 3 times in its first 150 years. The original priory church was a simple cruciform building, but, over time, was extended in almost every possible direction including a15th century second enclosure. Like many other abbeys and priories of the time, Kells Priory was dissolved by Henry VIII in the mid 16th century to stem the growing popular support for these organizations.
