Description
Stone arch gateway inside an abbey structure within the expansive 3+ acre medieval Augustinian ruin site known as Kells Priory, just south of the town of Kilkenny, County Kilkenny Ireland.
An extensive library of imagery from Ireland is available in my galleries. This image is part of my Kells Priory Ireland Gallery.
The Augustine Priory is situated along King's River and was founded in the late 12th century by Geoffrey FitzRobert. Archeological and historical study have led scholars to believe the site was attacked and burned 3 times in its first 150 years. The original priory church was a simple cruciform building, but, over time, was extended in almost every possible direction including a15th century second enclosure. Like many other abbeys and priories of the time, Kells Priory was dissolved by Henry VIII in the mid 16th century to stem the growing popular support for these organizations.
