Artist's Description

Stately Georgian-style door in the city center of Dublin, Ireland.

The Georgian Dublin time period (1714-1830) is a time period that marks the architectural style of the city's buildings and also marks the beginning reign of King George I to the death of King George IV. During this time, Dublin became very prosperous while becoming the largest city in the British Empire behind London. As the city grew in wealth, more development occurred outside the city center. The new Georgian homes being developed beyond the medieval town, though, were given strict architectural guidelines. Each building had to keep in line with the same uniform look and originality was discouraged. Eventually, to show individuality, residents began adding their own personal flair to their doors. Colorful paint, ornate door frames and hardware such as knockers and transoms above the door became common in door designs of this era.
